Dallas Suspension Practitioners' Conference - Apr 5-10 2012

I just began travelling and exploring the US in the last few years and wow, I've been missing a lot down there. I'm now finding opportunities to hit up al sorts of awesome events that I've been drooling over for years.

Ana's 4pt suicide suspensionThis year I coordinated with two of my good friends, Sal and Doug, and we made a plan to meet at the Ramada in Irving for the event. This was my first year visiting Texas and could not have had a better excuse to do so. Allen Falkner hosts an annual event called the Dallas SusCon, which is a practitioners only convention bringing together suspension practitioners from all over the world. This year there were teams and aspiring practitioners representing Canada, the US, Norway, Germany, Italy and more! This closed-to-the-public event offers not only the chance for artists/practitioners to get together and collaborate on different and interesting suspensions, but also to volunteer running seminars, discussions and roundtables sharing information and allowing for open dialogue on important suspension-related topics to aid in furthering the progression of safe suspension practices.

This year I had a chance to witness Throat to scrote hook pulland be involved with a lot of pretty awesome suspensions. There were many complex transitional suspensions (including Neil hanging from six hooks in the bottoms of his feet), some really gorgeously rigged static suspensions, cut-downs, single hook hangs and lots of fun toys around to play with. There was even some funnier things happening, such as a three-way throat to scrote hook pull. The one thing that we came close to pulling off was a freefall suspension, but that ended up being tabled for the time being. Hopefully we can make it happen next year, because I want to try one!

It was great to hang out with great friends whom I don't get to see often enough, as well as have the opportunity to work alongside. This has definitely proven to be one of my favourite events that I will be continuing to be a part of in the future. I'm already stoked for next year!

Also, my new friends Nick Whipple and Lukas Larsen put together a neat little video of the three-man "helicopter" suspension that we did on the Saturday of the event. We had the three of us on a triple spinning beam rigged up to a boom lift, then we got ourselves spinning as fast as possible before fully extending the lift. It was the highest I've ever hung! Check it out!
